After reveiwing a wide choice of songs in the past week, we have managed to wittle down the candidates to just three; "US" by Regina Spektor, "I WISH I WAS JAMES BOND" by Scouting for Girls and "EVERYDAY" by Buddy Holly.
Although very different in their genre and tempo, each song seems to share a quirky quality which has really captured our attention and imagination.
The group mutually decided at the beginning that we would steer clear from noticeably sad, emotional or slow tempo songs as we felt it would give our final product a lack of motivation and 'spark''; an aspect we really want to strive for this year!
After a session of brainstorming. I decided to explore some professional music videos that poccess the qualities we invisage to include in our own production:
Initial Ideas and influences...
"Us"- Regina Spektor...
We imagined a very vintage style of music video for this song where the image of the performer would be paramount rather than a subliminal story or plot. After listening to the song, we felt it embodied an identifiable quality of "1940's glamour", something that we may play on later.
I think that the asthetic qualities of this video would be vitally important to construct the right 'feel' and atmosphere to the production, most notably that of the setting.
If selected, we aspire to shoot this video prodominantly in the gardens of Ixworth Park (Roisin has connections with the management there so we should have a good chance of obtaining permission to film).
If we managed to get to film at this setting I think costume and make-up would top our priority list; especially as we would aim for a particular theme. Perhaps more research in this area of production is needed in order for us to gather a clearer and more informed vision.
Sugar Babes - "Change" -
This is not the complete video but I think this particular section is a brilliant example of the power make-up and costume can have on the style of a music video. I love the creativity and detail of the production, which is something I would like to take, replicate and manipulate.
Kelly Clarkson - "Behind These Hazel Eyes" -
Although this video is a performance based piece it also includes a very loose thread of narrative which I think engages the audience in the song effectively. This is perhaps something we should consider to draw into our own music video to make it more dynamic and exciting to watch.
Choreography is another aspect that would be fun to work with and is something that I think would compliment the song really well.
"I WISH I WAS JAMES BOND" - Scouting for Girls
In complete contrast to our first idea, this music video would be narrative based, with the characters directly addressing the camera at certain points in the song (mainly that of the chorus) to lip sync the lyrics. The images would link strongly with the song itself as the plot revolves around the daydream of a young boy invisaging what life would be like if he were James Bond.
This is certainly the most abitious of our 3 ideas, particularly in terms of editing as we would want to include some elements of split screening to show the correlation between the young boy and his Bond counterpart.
Example - "Last Ones Standing" -
I love the element of parody within this video; not only because of the humourous quality it entails, but also of the recognisable intertextuality it creates. Pastiche is certainly something that would be crafted into this video if chosen. The majority of the adventures featured would replicate the tradition Bond motifs; Bond Girls, Martini Glasses (shaken not stirred obviously) and White Cats!
Snow Patrol - "Signal Fire" -
The use of young actors worked very effectively in this music video and would be something that our production would largely focus on. I think it brings a whole new level to both the song and the video; not to mention the emotional effect it has on the audience!
"EVERYDAY" - Buddy Holly
This video is an exciting prospect as the challenge would be to bring this 1950s classic into the modern age without spoiling the 'aged' quality of the song. We decided that a narrative video would best suit the rhythm of the song; and so opted with a timeless boy-wants-girl plot with an intention to draw in some humour from the main vocalist's less than lucky exploits.
Despite the age of the song, we decided we would set the action in the present time in order to better engage and appeal to our youthful target audience.
Wheatus - "Teenage Dirtbag" -
This is a similar video to what we would strive for although, to better match the nature of the song, I think we would focus more on the pursuit and rejection sequences.
Yolanda Be Cool vs DCup - "We No Speak Americano" -
The black and white effect paired with the silent film/rustic film stock footage works really well. Perhaps this is something we could draw into our own production to create a link to the song's origins and make it more visually dynamic and unique.
